The finishing detail that keeps everything in place

Fashion tape is the least glamorous and most used item in a bridal fitting kit. A neckline that gapes when you lean, a strap that slips off the shoulder as the day warms up, a wrap that opens a fraction too far — these are all last-minute problems, and all of them are solved with a strip of double-sided tape rather than a needle.

These are pre-cut clear strips with a residue-light adhesive that bonds fabric to skin and fabric to fabric. Because they are pre-cut, they can go straight into a clutch or a getting-ready kit without scissors, which is exactly where they end up being needed. Every bridal party we fit leaves with a pack.

Common questions

Securing anything that moves when you do — gaping necklines, slipping straps, wrap fronts, cuffs and open seams. It bonds fabric to skin or fabric to fabric, which makes it the fastest fix for fit problems that appear only once you are dressed and moving.

While they do a very similar job, the after-effects of clutch glue on wedding dress fabrics can be detrimental. Sticking to small pieces of fashion tape can make sure it doesn't ruin your dress or cause skin irritation.

The adhesive is residue-light and formulated for garments, but silk, chiffon and unlined fine fabrics deserve a test on an inside seam first. Remove by peeling slowly rather than pulling, and lift at a low angle to the fabric.

Fashion tape is double-sided and thin, made to join two surfaces — it holds fabric in position but provides no lift. Boob tape is single-sided, wider and stronger, and is designed to carry weight and shape the bust. They solve different problems and are often used together.

Most brides use two to four strips on the dress itself and keep the remainder of the pack in a clutch for the reception. If you are also taping bridesmaids' necklines and straps, plan for a pack across every two people.
