Shapewear designed for the open-back gown
Most shapewear is built for high-neckline dresses at both the front and back. The moment a gown drops below the waist, a conventional bodysuit or high-waisted short becomes the problem it was meant to solve — a visible band across the waist, a shadow under bias-cut silk, a line no amount of steaming will hide. This piece was cut the other way round: the back line was decided first, and everything else engineered around it.
Sarah Stoute has spent her career in the fitting room of a bespoke bridal house, building and altering gowns for hundreds of New Zealand brides a year. Low-back shapewear exists here because the same problem kept walking through the door — a bride in an open-back dress who needed smoothing through the middle and had nothing to wear under it.
The result is continuous tummy-to-hip smoothing, silicone grip and boning that holds through a seated ceremony and a full reception, and a raw laser-cut leg border that leaves no ridge under clingy fabric. Common questions
You need shapewear cut specifically low at the back — a standard bodysuit or high-waisted short sits above the dress's back line and shows. This piece drops below the lumbar so the exposed back stays completely clean, while still smoothing the stomach, waist and hips. For bust support in a backless gown, add adhesive tape or a stick-on bra rather than anything with a band.
Not if the leg border is laser-cut rather than hemmed. Bias-cut silk satin is the most unforgiving bridal fabric there is — it telegraphs any horizontal edge. This garment uses a raw, laser-cut border and carries no seams through the smoothing panel, so there is no line to show.
It shouldn't. Silicone grip strips anchor the garment so it stays put through a seated ceremony, dinner and dancing. There are also boning pieces at the sides and in-leg to keep the fabric straight and moulded to your body.
Sizes run S–XL on regular NZ sizing, chosen by natural waist measurement rather than dress size. If you fall between two sizes, think about the dress going over the top: size up if you don't want any bulging or pulling showing through, or size down if you want more cinch and structure.
